Hover Ads

Back

Hover Ads are a great way to grab visitors' attention without disrupting their experience of your site. It is a 1000 pixels wide image that overlays the bottom of a page and hovers there while your site scrolls up and down behind it. Visitors can collapse the ad leaving a smaller Leave Behind Ad in the lower left corner. The Leave Behind Ad can be closed completely or expanded to see the original full-size Hover Ad.

Hover Ad Static - HTML5

The Hover Ad - HTML5 is a full 1000-pixel wide, 120-pixel tall static image that overlays the bottom of a page and hovers there; if a site visitor scrolls up and down on the site. It remains in its fixed location at the bottom while the site content appears to scroll behind the ad. The ad is collapsible and, when collapsed, an anchored Leave Behind Ad appears. Hover Ad Static - HTML5 ads do not animate.

Hover Ad with Animation - HTML5

The animated option includes all the features of the standard Hover Ad - HTML5 as well as subtle animation. Subtle animation must stay inside the framework of the ad and may include a moving background, one object moving across the ad and/or some animated text. LAKANA strongly recommends animation remain limited to not distract from the visitor's experience.

Hover Ad with Video - HTML5

The video option has all the functions of a standard Hover Ad, but includes a silent video teaser in the body of the ad to attract viewer attention. When a viewer clicks on the video, it expands into an enlarged screen overlay, complete with sound and additional customer branding. The video will retract automatically when the video is over, or if viewer clicks on the close button during the video. Viewers can choose to replay the video from the teaser, or by clicking on the play video link on the Leave Behind Ad. The Hover Ad with Video - HTML5 also has the option for advanced tracking, giving advertisers valuable insight into viewer interaction with their ad!

Hover Ad Leave Behind - HTML5

The Hover Ad - Leave Behind product can be applied to any of the Hover Ad products as a unique targeting option. The Hover Ad - Leave Behind allows for a different type of frequency capping, involving the Leave Behind product. The main, expanded unit for the Hover ad will continue to hold the 1x per user frequency cap (unless otherwise ordered), while the Leave Behind will remain on the page for every subsequent visit. The Hover Ads can be expanded from the Leave Behind unit and the Leave Behind visits will be tracked on their own line item in DFP.

The Hover Ad - Leave Behind will not work in the Safari Browser, as Frequency Cap cookies cannot be applied in Safari. The Leave Behind Ad also allows the viewer to scroll up and down without interfering with site content. Using the Leave Behind, site visitors can click an expand button to see the original full-size Hover or click a close button that will remove the ad completely. The Leave Behind cannot include animation.

Functionality

Collapse Button: available on either the right or left side of the ad. Default is the right side.

Browsers

Hovers run on all common HTML5-supporting browsers. Ads cannot run in Safari with a Frequency Cap, which is standard scheduling for Rich Media Ads. To run Rich Media ads in Safari browsers, please add an additional line in WebScan that can be targeted to Safari with no frequency cap.

Restrictions

A Hover Ad - HTML5 may not have any fly-outs or extend past the 120-pixel height.

Placement

Hover Ad - HTML5 can run on the homepage, channel, or article pages of a site. The ad appears at the bottom of the browser and spans the width of the browser. Hover Ad - HTML5s will only run on channel pages unless you specify in the targeting notes that it should run on article pages as well. (See special considerations below).

Special Considerations

Hover Ad - HTML5 must be served into an iframe.

With LAKANA's standard targeting, if a viewer navigates off the page the Hover Ad/Leave Behind is targeted to, then returns to that page, the leave behind will not be there. This is also true if the page is refreshed. This is due to frequency capping; the Hover Ad’s default is once per user per day. For other frequency capping options for both the Hover Ad and the Leave Behind, please refer to the frequency capping section of this page.

Hover Ad - Leave Behind will not work in the Safari Browser, as Frequency Cap cookies cannot be applied in Safari.

Trafficking

Hover Ad - HTML5 are not impression-based, but rather sold on a per-day basis. Impressions and clicks to the advertiser's website are tracked in the ad server. The Hover Ad can accommodate two additional click-through links. To capture metrics on the additional click-through data, a click tracker needs to be requested through WebScan for each additional click-through you request. Contact your Client Services Specialist with any questions regarding ordering click trackers in WebScan.

Frequency Caps

Default Frequency Cap

LAKANA defaults the frequency cap on Hover Ads to one per client in a specific location in a 24-hour period. Alternate frequency caps are available, please confirm with your Client Services Specialist if you need longer or shorter frequency caps. If a visitor views that page a second time within 24 hours, they will not see the Hover Ad or leave behind, as the default scheduling. The frequency cap is for each ad in the location. So, for instance, if four different ads were targeted to that ad position, a visitor would see a new Hover Ad each time they came back to that page for up to four visits during the 24 hours immediately following the first time the ad displays. On the fifth visit, they would see no Hover Ads until the 24-hour period has completed.

Hover Ad Leave Behind HTML5

The Hover Ad Leave Behind product is a different type of frequency capping that allows for the Leave Behind to remain on the page every visit after the main Hover unit has been delivered to its frequency cap. For example, if a Hover Ad with Video is ordered with the Hover Ad Uncapped product feature, the Hover Ad with Video HTML5 will deliver 1x per user, per 24-hour period (default frequency cap) and the Leave Behind will deliver every subsequent visit that user makes to the page within the course of the next 24 hours.

Hover Ad HTML5 can expand from the Leave Behind unit and the Leave Behind visits will be tracked on the Hover Ad Leave Behind line item that was ordered in WebScan. Frequency Caps can also be applied to the Hover Ad Leave Behind, if needed. For example, if your client would only like the Leave Behind to show 5 times per user/per 24-hour period then the user would be delivered the main Hover Ad unit once and the Leave Behind a maximum of 5 times.

Best Practices

Since the Hover Ad - HTML5 (like the Pushdown Ad) is sold on a daily basis; they are ideal for campaigns with dated promotional events.
